The Trail Revisited
Reminding myself of why I'm here
A revisit to one of my earliest posts:
On my home office door is this Mary Engelbreit poster with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
It’s my daily reminder that I’m not here on earth to just do what’s been done before. I have (we all have) a unique trail, doing the things that ONLY I can do.
Only I can walk my path with God. Only I can be wife to my husband, mother to my children. Only I can write my stories, my books. These are my unique life assignments and I want to do them to the best of my ability.
One of my favorite old songs says, “May all who come behind us find us faithful.” I want that. I want to be faithful in my spiritual life. Faithful to my husband, family, friends. Reliable. Brave. Showing up every day to love and support and encourage.
That’s the trail I hope I’m leaving—the trail I’ve created by daily walking (some days slogging), doing my best to love, support, encourage, and believe.
Now that I’m an “old woman,” leaving that trail feels like the most important thing I can do. Call it legacy. Call it generativity. Call it privilege. It matters.
You matter.
